Missing MK

By: Jeanne Cameron

I go into the woods

to make absence

less empty

sun kissed crystals

shimmer

and your eyes sparkle

I saw your son today

you once told me

we were outside the hospital

on a gentle June Friday

I was too scared

and too tired to talk

your eyes held me

Sitting next to you on Wednesday nights

I was sometimes struck deaf

by the weight of your sighs

I would breathe in your irritable energy

and send it out to the woods

spacious and still

and other times

you would breathe in my restless worry

and send it out to the greenhouse

of my grandmother’s mourning

The last time we spoke

on a Saturday morning outside a church

I want to be of use, you told me

and the truth of your words danced in your eyes

surrendering the malady of thinking

you laughed at yourself

I go into the woods

to make absence

less empty

sun kissed crystals

shimmer

and your eyes sparkle
